Shakespeare For Breakfast

For the seventeenth year, C theatre gives festival-goers the chance to start the day with a croissant, coffee and a boisterous but brilliant slice of the Bard.

In a parallel universe, Will’s best-loved characters chill out at Camp Shakespeare. The poet himself gives us the tour, pointing out facilities such as the badminton courts where Macbeth and his fearsome lady challenge the pedantic Malvolio to a malicious match. Elsewhere, characters argue over the rules of Twister, while Romeo and Juliet profess their saccharine love over a round of mini-golf. However, the idyllic peace of this spa-like camp is disrupted when one of Prospero’s spells goes awry and the characters are transported to the “world of TV sin.” Lady M. is pitted against the vicious Ann Robinson, Romeo finds himself in an M&S advert and Prospero must take on Sir Alan Sugar to save the day.

Packed with one-line hilarity, this silly but charming show is the perfect way to start a day of drama. Vanessa Hammick’s energetic Malvolio will certainly make you grin, while Faye Billing’s Lady Macbeth will force you to gulp your complimentary coffee in fright. Slapstick cheese at its best, this is well worth waking up for.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
