Sammy J - 58 Kilograms of Pure Entertainment

A tall thin handsome man enters the Bosco theatre in a sharp suit and bright blue shirt, then sits down at a white grand piano. He explains that he was destined to be at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, as when he was born a gypsy predicted it – well I’m glad she did because Sammy J with his blend of music and quick witted improvisation is one of the best comics at the festival so far. Think a hot up-to-date version of Victoria Wood singing witty songs about such topics as Y2K, Metaphor and how to cover all the bases when it comes to the afterlife. With a knock at the political correctness crowd, a great duet with himself and Jacko the koala Sammy J is sure to be a hit this festival. The audience fell in love with this new star almost immediately, energetic and engaging Sammy effortlessly created a rapport with everyone in the room. Watch out for his stunning backwards song, interruptions from Tom Hanks and some undressing at the end! Another great show at the Spiegel Garden. Not to be missed.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

The Blurb

Best Newcomer, 2006 Melbourne Comedy Festival. He sings backwards. He talks to birds. Best of all, he weighs only 58 kilograms - see him before he's bigger. 'Uncomfortably brilliant'
