Direct from the Moscow Co. Theatre, Phantom Pains takes you on a visually stunning journey of dance and physical theatre.A dynamic soundscape accompanied the talented onstage duo through a series of stories and characters who although perhaps not recognisably archetypal are charming nonetheless. The performers attention to detail and effortless execution of every gesture from start-to-finish was exemplary and the production was knitted together well with some very interesting staging that used the functional set and brilliant lighting design to the full. However, in a word-less production of fifty minutes that relies on physical gesture to convey the emotions of characters, I question how much of the passion and energy given from the stage was instantly recognisable to the audience as emotion. The production is a little long (and answers to the spot the narrative competition on a postcard please), but the onstage talent, passion and flawless execution more than makes up for it.I wonder if this production has the mass public appeal required to make it a hit this Fringe.
