Much celebrated world-class performer Melvin Brown, better known as Movin’ Melvin Brown, gives another uninhibited, inspiring and entertaining performance at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year.Brown is an accomplished song-and-dance man who has impressed the Edinburgh crowd many times over. His show this year is about Brown himself, presented in old-style vaudeville. He starts off by sharing his experience of growing up as a black kid in America in the 1940’s and 50’s. He goes on to tell stories about his early love of dancing, black music, living with racism, national service, romances, dancing at a male revue, and helping the underprivileged. He illustrates each of his phases with songs from the era, including ‘Crying Time’, ‘The Great Pretender’, and ‘Your Love is Lifting Me’.Throughout the show Brown throws in a bit of preaching, quotes that have inspired him, exceptional loose joint tap (which we are told he had to learn in three months), and to everybody’s surprise (and shock for a few) a strip.Brown’s deep earthy laugh is contagious – even his music and backstage crew cannot help themselves joining in. There is no denying that Brown was born to perform. His easy mannerisms and the charisma that oozes out of him puts his audience at ease - this is what makes this show an absolute treat.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
