Two comic actors play numerous different quirky characters, as the quest to read the big, breaking news goes on. First Max and Iván are their own warm up act Los Guapos, one strumming a ukulele, and singing together about this. They talk about playing the spoons, and they translate jokes. The gags are thick and fast, and the song about loving Edinburgh is especially fun.
Next up are Max and Iván as newsreaders. This links with the Egham Gazette on the seats, explaining how Max Olesker and Iván González have headed off to make their name at Edinburgh. The pair explain their need to read the news, and the team searching the city for a scoop. They tell their history, leaving Egham, and the Fringes unparalleled potential for news.
The news phone will light up when the crack news team find something. They explain while they wait, theres some content free filler. These include regular voice-over words from sponsors, some of whom really should concern the Egham authorities. Another is the history of the Fringe, assisted by mime. This involves pottery, lepers, and Jesus cousin. Some of these mimes are especially comic; others impossible.
The one trouble with the rooms set up is that the newsdesk is not visible for a large percentage of the audience, and by their very nature, these are the slower moments anyway. So while the pair can be heard throughout, its hard to see including the late flashing phone.
This is a pity, as when you can see them, both Max and Iván have great comic timing, not just on the lines, but also facial expressions. High energy, quick witted, and with plenty of strong material, these two may be one of the best things to come out of Egham in a long time.
