Smoke rings, remote control candle snuffers, fizzy IRN-BRU and the world's first steam engine are worth the entrance fee alone. Combine that irresistible collection of kiddy-delighting fare with Marty Jopson's sheer delight in his wacky work and you have a show to enthrall even the youngest child. Seeming perfectly at home in the Victorian surroundings of his venue, and with more than a whiff of mad scientist about him, Jopson dispenses complex scientific ideas in an accessible but far from patronising manner. The vocabulary is high-end and challenging, and the forty or so kids in today’s show were clearly thrilled to be treated as having intelligent minds. It's fundamentally a lecture - purporting to tell us the story of the internal combustion engine - but leads Jopson off on many happy tangents which delighted adults and children alike. There's just the right amount of facts and figures before getting on with the explosions (which come in all sizes), the flames (which come in three exciting varieties) and some very impressive tricks with gunpowder cotton and vacuums. The show climaxes with an awesome demonstration of how dangerous a carrot can be in the wrong (or in the case right) hands. Ever seen a carrot shatter a piece of wood? Well, now’s your chance. All in, this was a delightful hour of pops and whistles and mist and madness, and highly recommended. But remember - don't try this at home!
