The American Dream is gleefully constructed and subsequently smashed to pieces in this colourful physical theatre performance which features live music, singing and dancing. Gasping for Home is a shallow exploration of the plight of the law-abiding foreigner in the face of US immigration policy. The narrative tells of a Portuguese immigrant couple who represent the archetypal wide-eyed foreigner lured to the US by the promise of social mobility, financial success, a TV and a big fridge. They have to jump through an amusing selection of hoops to get in, and are drilled in American pride on arrival (think lots of flag-waving). It is the story of their love for each other and for the US, both of which end in heartache when deportation tears them apart. At times informative and mildly thought-provoking, the show effectively highlights the blatant injustices of the system. Although it initially touches upon the more challenging subject matter of the underlying issues, it fails to develop in this direction, rather choosing to focus on the superficial. This promising young company have found their unique style in this ambitious work, and the cast of three deliver and reiterate their simple but heartfelt political message loudly and clearly, with a long line of exclamation marks to boot. Their cheesy enthusiasm perfectly encapsulates the stereotype of American pride from which the fear and paranoia behind the policies stem, and which this piece portrays. It is, by choice, not a work of subtlety and, as it progresses, the gameshow grins become monotonous and the story ends before it has really scratched the surface of the issue.
