This is an established production of Mike Maron Productions take on the book. It first played here in 1999, and passing through the amazing array of Mediterranean produce and wine in this world famous shop on the way into the small studio is the perfect appetiser.
For those who know the book, the bitter sweet love story that takes place against the background of the Italian and German invasion of the Greek Islands during the Second World War, there will be plenty to enjoy here, certainly more than in the dreadful film version. For those who are coming to it fresh, you will be moved and amused by turns as co- performers and Maron take us through an extraordinary range of characters.
Alison Stephens provides a sound track to the whole thing, playing an astonishing range of instruments, not just the mandolin, and she is ably accompanied and backed up by Anne Evans on flute and keyboards.
A simple story telling technique nicely executed in this very different, if slightly cramped, space.
