With a season-opening gala at Carnegie Hall, the Berliner Philharmoniker and its music director, Sir Simon Rattle, also begin a weeklong residency in the city. Mr. Rattle's talent for color should come out in an otherwise tepid program featuring Rachmaninov's "Symphonic Dances" and the closing scenes from Stravinsky's "The Firebird." But the real draw is the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, whose performances as a teenager with this orchestra made her a star. She plays the popular Bruch concerto, but only on Oct. 1; the complete Stravinsky ballet fills in on Oct. 2.
