Tamsin Shasha, the artistic director and co-founder of Actors of Dionysus, is the sole performer in this play. Her only prop is a rope hanging from the ceiling, which she climbs, knots and hangs from while playing all the parts.
The play is inspired by The Bacchae but has been freely adapted. It examines the relationship between a modern day guru, who claims to be the son of Dionysus, and a professor, Maddie, who is a sceptic and has written a damning article about the guru. The guru is apparently trying to win over the sceptic, or perhaps trying to destroy her, while Maddie is drawn in against her will, leading to the ultimate tragedy.
The performance is very unusual, combining acting with gymnastics and watching Tamshin Shashas skills on the rope adds greatly to what otherwise might be a fairly routine story. The play manages to hold the attention of the audience without ever being totally gripping. Overall, worth seeing for the performance.
