Vivid musical picture-painting lies at the heart of this typically wide-ranging recital from Swiss pianist Andreas Haefliger, famed worldwide for his searching insights and his pianistic power " and following his memorable performance of Beethovens mighty Hammerklavier Sonata at the 2013 International Festival.
Musorgskys grand Pictures from an Exhibition pushes the piano to the limits of what it can convey in its imposing depictions of images by Viktor Hartmann, by turns grotesque and uplifting. Liszt paints a musical picture of St Franois d'Assisein the first of his two Legends.
Two contrasting sonatas showcase Haefligers power and poetry to complete his recital: the serene sophistication of Beethoven Sonata in A Op 101, and the restless turmoil of Bergs brief early Sonata.
