And The Devil May Drag You Under

And the Devil May Drag You Under is a modern, sexy circus show adapted to fit the stage at Fletch @ St Andrews. The church provided an atmospheric setting for the acts which were linked together by our host for the evening: the devil himself. There is a variety of acts, from cabaret songs through arial stunts, to impressive illusions. I note that this show was reviewed when it played in Edinburgh, but with different acts. The audience was asked to vote on whether each act was to ascend to heaven or languish in hell based on their 'purity of heart' rather than the quality of their act. While we didn't really understand how to make this judgement or why we were making it, the audience and I got plenty of enjoyment bellowing for the eternal damnation of act after act. The host was full of energy and quick-witted, but I felt myself waiting too long for each act to come on. The introduction to each act included an explanation of how they had ended up in hell, but became repetitive and predictable. I lost interest at times while waiting and found myself staring at the church walls. There certainly is incredible talent in the troupe and with a reworking to keep up the pace of the show it would have had a different impact entirely. You can expect to be very entertained and impressed by the individual talents. The audience had a great Friday night but I can't help but feel shows like this need to reach their apotheosis to escape the shadow of La Clique.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
