Amanda Palmer

Dressed like a bohemian Can-Can dancer and wearing a jacket inspired by Beeltlejuice, Amanda Palmer sits in front of the keyboard and lets loose with her fantastic set.

Reminiscent of Tori Amos, Patti Smith and Cyndi Lauper this member of the Dresden Dolls is in full command of her audience. Of course this being the Spiegeltent there is no such thing as “just” a singer. The Danger Ensemble perform their own weird and wonderful dance macabre as suitable accompaniment to Amandas’ songs.

There is a definite 80’s feel to the whole show which is probably encouraged by a cover of Madonas “Material Girl“. All her songs are hauntingly familiar but tantalisingly unrecognisable. There was a compulsory Radiohead cover, which was a bit obvious, but the cover of Umbrella was lively and energetic.

A definite highlight of the show was Ms Palmers performance of Black Freighter. Both sinister and melancholy, and yet strangely intriguing. Arrive early and get a booth if you can, as it's worth the wait. I was not the only member of the audience who was disappointed at the lack of CDs to buy after the show – a definite oversight, especially as I’ve still got the some of the songs stuck in my head!

Reviews by Terry Gilliland

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
