Absolute Cabaret with Karen Egan is a delightful show. The Irish temptress takes us back in time with some classic cabaret songs from the likes of Marlene Deitrich, but interspersed with her own deadpan Irish humour.
When Karen is on stage singing, everything else just melts away and you really feel transported to one of those small hedonistic Berlin clubs where the atmosphere is charged with the prospect of the exciting and naughty.
With each change of scarf or accessory, different characters are revealed from comic to tragic. With renditions of Falling In Love Again and Postman Pat, Karen wowed the audience. But it was her sinister rendition of Mac the Knife that gripped the entire theatre and showed us how macabre cabaret can be. Mac was not the jolly sounding fellow Sinatra makes him sound like.
