Fabulous, glamorous and hilarious, Aaron Twitchen’s Princess Guide to Dating is one of the better Free Fringe shows you will see this year. It has everything from Kate Middleton appreciation to Spice Girls sing-alongs and an outstanding Britney Spears lookalike. This man certainly knows how to entertain.
Flamboyantly funny, Twitchen made his audience welcome from the moment they entered the room, showing us personally to a seat and handing out makeshift fans to combat the heat of the room. A welcoming host, he knew how to handle a difficult venue and overflowing audience with good humour and concern.
Twitchen has an amazing stage presence; holding the audience’s attention with his highly energetic personality. He knows his own weaknesses and strengths, such as having a talent for dancing and stand-up. Singing, though, was not his strong point, yet somehow he made this work for him and this all singing, all dancing, and all comedy show sparkled with laughter and energy.
His theme was well chosen too. I must admit, I was a little dubious about it at first – Princess Guide to Dating? I wasn’t sure it would really be the average person’s cup of tea. Wrong. Whether male, female, gay or straight, the entire audience were enjoying and participating in the show at every opportunity. This isn’t just a show for the princesses out there, but for everyone who has ever had a bad time dating. A completely relatable topic for all in the audience, I think Twitchen definitely touched a few hearts with his familiar stories of love and loss.
Surprisingly heart-warming at times, Princess Guide to Dating showed Twitchen’s refreshing perspectives on relationships and friendships, both positive and negative. Definitely a show for all those who love fabulousness, glam and meaningful comedy, I think Twitchen has brought one of the best free Fringe comedy shows to Edinburgh.
