Dust Never Settles In Torchlight explores a dark, immersive landscape through a poetic sequence of choreography and movement. Broadway Baby has a chat.
The physical exhaustion of the piece means that training must be undertaken to prepare our performers to perform the show for a week so that has probably been our biggest challenge.
Tell us about your show.
Inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, this devised physical theatre piece reveals a dark, bare landscape; the originally well-dressed ensemble are forced to repeat and repeat as they, and the stories they know so well, disintegrate. In this unique adaptation the cast deliver an immensely physical performance of great emotional depth. Performed in moments of isolated torchlight, the piece is accompanied by an arresting and immersive musical score. The spectators are offered an intimate retelling of these classic tales, seen once again in a new light.
Why did you decide to take your show to Space UK this year?
We have previously worked with Space UK on another production and another company last year and we felt that Charles and his team at Space UK provided us with the best space for the best deal. They also hugely invest in creating relationships with young artists and we’re very on board with that. We also found that Space UK’s unique selling point of allowing space company members to view each other’s work for free is also invaluable in creating some great relationships with other companies and to generally see some fantastic, innovative new work.
Why Edinburgh? What’s the attraction?
Our show is also being shown at the Camden Fringe in August but Edinburgh has a draw that theatre companies cannot avoid. It is the hub of theatre in August and we couldn't wait to return with a new show and our new production company this year.
What makes your show unique amongst the thousands of others at the festival?
As playwright Barney Norris said of the show, it is a “deeply impressive piece of work; inventive, exhilarating, compelling and beautiful. It's directed by a young artist of immense talent, who has choreographed a gorgeous, poetic sequence of stories, packed with performances of great emotional intensity. What really impresses is the collective commitment of a company who work wonderfully with each other, and for each other.” We believe that all of these factors make our show something that we hope audiences won’t want to miss at Edinburgh this year.
What has been the biggest challenge in getting your show ready for Edinburgh?
The physical exhaustion of the piece means that training must be undertaken to prepare our performers to perform the show for a week so that has probably been our biggest challenge.
What’s the main thing you want to get out of the festival this year?
As a company, we want to show a great piece of new and exciting theatre that we hope will excite audiences and critics alike.
