Broadway Baby, Victoria Bastable and Rosalie Falla talk about Frame Narrative, a comedy exploring the person behind the painting.

Our show explores the potential for comedic interpretations of artworks that, if locked away, deny the world the opportunity to enjoy paintings beyond the brushstrokes.

Tell us about your show

What happens when paintings are stored away and the stories behind them are forgotten?

Frame Narrative is a fast paced comedy that takes a closer look at this idea and explores the secret lives of the characters that have been lost with the paintings. Our show combines comedy with physical theatre and original music to guarantee an entertaining afternoon.

Why did you decide to take your show to Space UK this year?

Venue 45 is an intimate space that is perfect for the needs of our production. We love the way the audience surround the main stage while the multiple entrances mean we can really get creative with the staging. Venue 45 is so close to the Royal Mile putting us right at the centre of the Fringe.

What makes your show unique amongst the thousands of others at the Festival?

The variety within our show. The episodic format gives us the opportunity to explore different stories, cultures, historical settings and genres within a single performance which delves into the backgrounds of paintings of diverse styles and eras. Our show explores the potential for comedic interpretations of artworks that, if locked away, deny the world the opportunity to enjoy paintings beyond the brushstrokes.

How did you create your show?

As our show is divided into sketches we split the cast into groups of specialisation. Each group had an assigned writer and director who took on a painting as a starting point for a short scene collaborating with the actors to devise the untold stories. The process helped us develop a story that benefits from the different skills and backgrounds that the members of our group bring to the company. Consisting of actors, dancers, musicians, comedians, writers and artists, we managed to bring together a play which has a wide-ranging appeal.
