After We Danced is a story about love, mystery and tragedy bundled up into one neat package. Broadway Baby finds out more.
Tell us about your show
It’s a love story, a mystery and a tragedy rolled into one. The play’s about a couple who meet in the summer of 1952 and start what should be the defining relationship of their lives, but at the end of the summer something happens and they never see each other again until sixty years later. The big question is what the ‘something’ was that happened.
Why did you decide to take your show to Space UK this year?
We took another play Casual Encounters to Space@Surgeons Hall last year and had a fantastic run, great crowds and a lovely venue. Made me want to come back this year and do Space UK again.
Why Edinburgh? What’s the attraction?
It’s something to do with being captivated by the Fringe when I first came to see it. Before that there was just something that made me want to come and see what all the fuss was about. After that, it’s the feeling of being on the inside and a part of it that draws you in.
What makes your show unique amongst the thousands of others at the festival?
It’s designed to be heartwarming and make you cry all at the same time. There’s no grand statement behind it, just a great story well told. With the time slot we have (9.40) we wanted to create something that will appeal to people who don’t just want stand up, and maybe don’t want stand up at all.
How did you create your show?
In the old fashioned way. A script that slowly evolved through a few drafts and then got the cast and it evolved again.
What’s the main thing you want to get out of the festival this year?
We got great audiences last year, but reviews were hard to come by. This year I’d like to get both, but the main thing is to feel that the people who come to see it leave feeling that they’ve had a good time.
