Well-travelled poet Carys ‘Matic’ Jones brings Professional Nomad: What Happens When a Gap Year Becomes a Gap Decade? to Clerk's Bar this August.
This will be my first year at the Fringe and I feel giddy thinking about it.
What do people need to know about you?
I’m a poet, drummer, occasional ukulele strummer, and alternative hip hop artist from Birmingham. My work has been featured on OHTV, Guardian Witness, Nubi Magazine, BBC Introducing, and The Word is Bond. I’m the founder of Lyrically Minded in South Korea, and I’m a Seoul poetry slam runner up.
What are you up to this Fringe?
I will be debuting my solo one-woman show Professional Nomad: What Happens When a Gap Year Becomes a Gap Decade? It’s over eight years' worth of travel stories, poems, anecdotes, and perhaps a song or two all condensed into an hour. I talk about singing Electric Six’s 'Gay Bar' at karaoke in North Korea, performing stand-up comedy in a Bangkok strip club, selling kitchen knives and hosepipes on South Korean TV, sharing a bed with a Vietnamese cleaning lady after being kicked out of my home in Laos, plus several other experiences you may or may not find intriguing. It’s not a comedy show, although there are comedic elements. It’s a raw, candid piece, or at least that’s how I hope it comes across on stage. This will be my first year at the Fringe and I feel giddy thinking about it.
What else are you going to see?
I’ll definitely be seeing my friends Ben Norris and Swingerella. I also hope to catch Paula Varjack, James McKay, Harry Baker, and Phill Jupitus’s shows.
What is your favourite word?
Phenomenon.
